San Antonio Jailbreak

Since I wasn't in Texas for Gerred's 24th in February, I decided to do something special for him when I came out in March. Knowing we both love running, I signed us up to race in the San Antonio Jailbreak 5K.

[via]

When it came time to race day, we get there a half hour late. I was freaking out about how long it would take us and if they would let us run at all. They almost turned us away since volunteers were already taking up the course, but they called on their walkie talkies to see if anyone would help. Thankfully, they allowed it. We got our bibs, ran over to another station, and began our race 20 minutes in.

It was just us. We had the course to ourselves. Since, the volunteers had already taken down the flags of the beginning of the course which made it a lot more real. It looked like we were actually running from something: prison guards or zombies or whatever. It was definitely post-apocalyptic, in fact, we were running on The National Shooting Range in San Antonio, TX. They had shut down more than half of the range for this event so we could run through obstacles, but there were people still shooting off live rounds not too far away. So really when we were running around and we he ardthe pops of guns in the background we felt like we were really living in this adventure world. It made us both think about the zombies run app, which I swear by.

First thing we do is follow this silver truck up into the hills. We hear the pop pop pop of the guns in the background and we find our first obstacle, a small mud patch. It's not threatening, just a mud patch we run through. We think this is going to be easy then we run into the woods and find our first real obstacle, the under over hurdles. So I had to climb under then jump and hop over an orange parking barrier. I was a little less skilled with going under but I surprised myself. Our next obstacle was a dark wooded area with stretchy cables laced through the tree like a spider web james bond laaser that you had to find yourself through.

Once we got out of there we went through a small tunnel. I had a bit of a fear going through. I don't think I have a fear of heights or of small spaces, but I definitely have a fear of crawling through long tunnels because I think I'm gonna get stuck. I'm in there and I find small rocks and gravel inside. I was crawling through with my arms and hating it.  I say to Gerred "sing to me to get me out" and he immeditately sings "Talk to Dirty to Me." That helped me get through, surprisingly.

We pop out and we had to do high knee tires, It was fun 'cause it was like a work out. I took it like a bootcamp or interval ladder. The whole time we are running Gerred is coming up with a post-apocalyptic story since it looks like we are on an abandoned farm with obstacles. After that we run under barbed wire. We get out and crawl through more tunnels before reaching the water slide cut into the side of a hill. It's essentially soap mud and water and we slid down it and got wet. We had water in our shoes and come back and jump over the tunnels.

We get to the pallet walls. I got to the wall and said I didn't think I could do it but I give it a try. Gerred coaches me over like just swing your legs over and I did it. I made it past this obstacle. And I've always thought I'd never be able to do that and that's why I never joined the military--well there are plenty of reasons why I never joined and that's one of them.

Then we got to the first mud pit which was the hardest thing for me because gerred jumped in just fine. I tell him to watch me jump in because I thought I'd jump in and get through it like it's black Hawk down but I didn't I slipped and fell backward submerging myself in the muddy water and kept slipping as I was trying to climb out.

After that we made our way over to more barriers to jump over. We then caught up to the people that started before us. We actually caught up to them, passed them, and beat them in the end. So we meet these guys at a diagonal rope climb wall. I think I'm too muddy and almost give up, but I start to pull myself up this wall by grabbing knot after knot and I get over. Coming down I fell though. I pretended to belay but actually just chose to fall so that I could continue the run quicker.

Soon after we made it to the tire wall and I thought I was done with the tall walls. But I make my way over, passing more people. I couldn't believe it. Then we had to climb up a cargo net. We passed more people and soon we reach the last obstacle of the 5k: the water slide. Gerred and I race each other up it and I screamed when I slipped down.

Finding we weren't 100% worn out, we decided to take the road less traveled. The Road Less Traveled was an added 2 miles to the journey that included us running up and down a severely steep hill 6 times, army crawling under barbed wire, carrying a tire up a hill, running around trees with sandbags. Basically the last part was added Crossfit that I still can't believe we did. I flipped that tire all the way up the hill. I told myself like I was doing the whole race that I wasn't going to quit.

When we came to the last part, we found it was a swimming mud pit. Oh, it was great. When we passed the finish line we were both awarded medals and given a beer. We threw our shoes into a donate pile and got hosed off by firemen. It was definitely a great birthday gift for Gerred and I loved that I got to be a part of it.

Corpus Christi Run

Last time I came to Corpus Christi to visit Gerred and I went for a few runs and it really kicked off my love for running. This trip I told him I wanted to run all over Texas. So we set out to run in Downtown Corpus Christi. I'd never been and we thought a run (with a few stops here and there for a picture) would be a great way to see it.

We wound up running 3.2 miles all up the shore and even ventured out on this rock formation for a mile. I saw tons of palm trees, beach, and birds and loooooved it.

Workout Schedule

Last semester, my workouts were sparse, but since returning back to college this time I've been kicking my activity level into high gear. I've got a variety of different workouts that target different fitness aspects like cardio, balance, flexability, or strength. My typical workout week looks like this:

Monday
Tuesday
Wednesday
Thursday
Friday
Saturday
Sunday
Zumba
Yoga
Gym
MMA
Run
Run
Run
Gym
MMA
Turbokick
Volleyball
Gym

Volleyball

Yesterday I skipped yoga (because Lenka and I were much too tired to go), but I wound up sending 5 hours in the gym so it wasn't a great loss. Danny and I hit the gym at 4 to begin with 2 miles on the treadmill followed by some crazy goblet squats on the upside down half yoga balls. Some remixed Lana Del Ray song came on and I made it a party while finishing up other strength exercises I could barely do before heading to dinner.

Then came Mixed Martial Arts or MMA where Lenka, Will, Adam, Hjordis and I worked on striking, conditioning, and jiu jitsu. I can now sort of do a kimora hold, but just like dancing it takes me several attempts to figure out the actual moves.

Right after MMA ended, I headed up to the gym to meet with my intramural volleyball team, Internationals. We peppered between the 12 of us and then scrimmaged one another to see what sort of a level we were on. Turns out we're pretty good. In fact, we wound up beating Cal Coursey's Email, but I'd wager they won best team name.

To celebrate Katri, Kristine, and I relaxed in the sauna before calling it a night. I'm liking how active my lifestyle is right now and even happier I'm able to workout with all my friends.

Fitness Progress

It was right after coming back from the Dominican Republic for my brother's wedding that I began to work out. I saw photos of my pale self in a bikini, belly hanging out, playing chicken and I thought, hmmm better fix that. So from as soon as I landed back in the good ol' USA (and had conquered my bout of food poisoning) I hit the gym.

(You bet I untagged myself from these)

When I first walked into the new redesigned Johnson Fitness Center on campus I was afraid there would be troves of sorority girls on treadmills and lax bros lifting, but they weren't all there at 10 am on a tuesday. So I popped in some headphones and brought my baggy t-shirted self over to the stair master. That's when I noticed my friend Nina there. I confessed I didn't go to the gym often (the only time I went was freshman year with my roommate. It was the only time we hung out and she was crazy athletic) and if she wouldn't mind showing me the ropes. I tagged along watching as she showed me the machines, how to use the free weights, kettle bells, crunches. We then made a pact to meet every tuesday and thursday morning that semester. And you know what, we stuck to it. My friends Sam and Karyn also slowly became my other gym buddies and I was so motivated that I was practically going everyday to the gym. By the end of the semester we were noticing that exercises that were once difficult, we were pushing even harder for and we were starting to get muscle tone.

Then school let out and I headed out to Texas to visit Gerred for two weeks. I decided I would keep the exercise and the healthy eating up while I was there and he supported me. We would head to gym on base and he like Nina would show me new moves to work different muscle groups. The next day Gerred said, "let's go for a run on the beach." I took on the challenge and turned on my Strava app and we ran from his house, across the street, and to the beach. We ran the stretch as I listened to Backstreet boys and Spice Girls. He kept me motivated when I was ready to pass out from the Texas heat, telling me to run and slap his hand. When we finished the race I saw the achievements I unlocked and how faster I raced.

When I got back home on June 1st I noticed that Strava had updated the app with challenges. The challenges all had different specifications to help motivate you and see how you stack up against competitors. Essentially this is my lonely person's gym buddy. I can run with friends anywhere they were, see the work we did and give kudos and motivation. Naturally I signed up for three challenges: The June Doogle Run, The June Doogle Bike and The Any Way 10k.
The June Doogle is essentially challenging you to run (or bike depending on the challenge) as many kilometers as you can during the month of June. So far I'm at 33km for the June Doggle run and an improperly logged 10km (it reads 0km for now) from the bike ride I did with my dad on the Piney Orchard Nature Trail.
The Any Way 10k challenges you to run a 10k as fast as you can between June 15th and June 16th. I completed this today and I'm really surprised with myself since I've never run a 10k before and I all of a sudden up and ran it. Basically I owe my completion to the entire fitness journey I've gone through since February. I got myself to the gym, on a bike, and running as fast as I can. I'm proud of myself and ready to continue on. I have lost 10 pounds since January and would love to see where I'll be by next year.

P.S. Do you guys have Strava? If you do follow me here.

Gym Time

I might have slipped from my work out regime of running everyday around the crazy two weeks, but I'm getting back on track now. Because I started up again at Gold's Gym and plan to go for the entirety of Summer.

My favorite thing that that the gym offers is the classes, especially Zumba. So I'll be trying to head up to classes when I can between my changing work schedule. Today, I went for a run, headed to the gym and took a Pilates Mat class, did the stair-master, and lifted a bit of weights. Maybe I'll be a bit sore for tomorrow, but I'll be driving back to the gym as early as I can tomorrow for day 2 of hard core gym time.

Is anyone else going to any workout classes or heading to the gym at all this summer? I'd love to hear about your workout regime!

Stay On Plan

My anticipation of traveling in August is upon me. I know I need to save my money and that means tacking on a job or two to help the cause. But ugh, there are so many things that jump in the way of the whole saving money thing. It's like dieting and finding a beautifully displayed jar of M&Ms sitting right in front of you at a meeting (that happened today, and yeah I might of had a few.)

Honestly though, the things that really get me are things that are travel oriented odds and ends like this Kate Spade Bon Voyage Necklace. I will stay strong. eat healthy, execrcise, work, and save this summer. Fear not!

Lululemon

One of the things that always renew motivation is active wear. Seriously I cute workout outfit makes the world of difference. If I'm wearing a baggy t-shirt and gym shorts I'm probably going to feel average, if I'm wearing cute yoga pants and a bright top I just feel faster for some reason. So here are some eye candy workout clothes from Lululemon that keep me motivated.

All of these fun colored clothes are making me feel like I need to go for a run!

Body Love

I am exercising and dieting this summer, but it's not just to lose weight and be thin. It's more to encourage good healthy habits in myself. I mean sure, fitting into new clothes and showing off a nice bathing suit body is sweet, but appreciating myself as I am and will be is the the best thing I can do.

Because body confidence is what is really important. And all the numbers in between don't mean a thing.  Go on an exercising journey to be healthy human being first and foremost. Love yourself throughout and throw away all the negative thoughts you're thinking about yourself and think positively into the future.

Getting Fit

Now that I'm back at home for the summer, with lots of free time, I've decided to set a goal for myself -- to lose at least 15 pounds. And I'm going to do it! I'm going to diet and exercise like I have been for three days in a row.

I'll be switching around my workout routines from going on runs, lifting weights, P90x, EA Active on the Wii, and little exercises from magazines daily. I might even kayak or play volleyball. We'll see.

Be sure to follow my journey in "getting fit" and be sure to join me!

Weird Races

I'm sort of trying to get into the whole fitness thing again. It's a little hard right now with the last few weeks of classes, but as soon as Summer hits I hope to kick it into high gear. The first thing I'll be doing is working on running around my block. Then from there I'll try to run some 5Ks with my friends and try to stay as motivated as I can. As I've been researching races two really stuck out with me, The Color Run as well as The Run For Your Lives: 5K Obstacle Couse Zombie Race.

This crazy and creative race is just like the Indian festival, Holi, where everyone throws powdered colors at one another in the street to celebrate the day. Basically for 3.1 miles, runners wearing all white are pelted with multiple colors on their way to the finish line.

In this post-apocalyptic 5K runners have to race for their lives while dodging zombies, 12 different man-made obstacles, and choosing their own trails. This race seems like there is a lot of strategy involved.

Since I'll be in Ireland for both of these two races I'll be missing out. But I hope by passing these along one of you will try to run these and have fun. Till next year then!

Fruit Smoothie

I get on a health kick when I'm at home because that's usually when I don't have to worry about papers or exams and can exercise freely and eat what I want.

So far this Spring Break I've been going on runs in the morning around my neighborhood with Gerred. The first day I ran I forgot my running shoes at home and had to use my volleyball shoes from middle school. They were about a size too small and the soles were falling off. By the end of the run they were in the trash and I found myself picking up some ASICS shoes I got on sale from Kohls.

I've been making a lot of smoothies too with my magic bullet. I love coming up with new recipes and this new batch I made definitely tastes better than the smoothies from the bubble tea place in the mall.

Fruit Smoothie

Ingredients
2 cups Ice
1 Banana
1 cup Strawberries
1 cup peaches
1 Yogurt
1/2 cup Lemonade

Put it all in and blend.

Pop in a straw and you've got a delicious healthy smoothie.

Stay healthy my friends.

Sports Bra

Another issue taken from bustygirlcomics is the fact that Sports Bras are hard to come by. It's hard to find sports bras that give support when you're running or jumping. A busty girl has pretty much only two options.

1. Wear two bras for extra support.
2. Get a really good fitting bra.

For the two bra rule, pair an underwire bra with a cute elastic bra on top. For some reason it works and it's the much more stylish option.

The best fitting sports bra I've ever come across is the Enell Sports Bra. It's got hooks in the front and gives the best support. As in zero movement support. They come in pink and green as well.

5K

I ran my first 5K this past Sunday in the 3rd Annual John Ripley Memorial Race and I am not a runner. Not at all. There are 3 things that keep me from running in general:
  1. My knee- I tore my meniscus 4 years ago and even after surgery it never fully healed.
  2. Boobs- I have big boobs, it's not fun to run.
  3. I'm Lazy- The thought of running makes me cringe a little.

But I have to say that this decision to run was perfect. I feel so accomplished for running for a good cause and for crossing that finish line. It was nice to run it with Gerred since he had me singing cadences and songs we like. Apparently, from what Gerred said, cadences gave me bursts of speed. Now it's off to the next 5K Thanksgiving weekend with the Arlington Turkey Trot. Wish me luck!
